The "Tofteviken" was enroute from Philadelphia to New York, while the Polaris was sailing back to its homeport in Massachusetts after a night of fishing. The "Polaris" suffered damage to its bow and outrigger. There was a crew of seven aboard the vessel with no report of injuries. It was able to return to its homeport safely. The "Tofteviken" suffered an approximate 30-foot long gash along its portside hull. There were no injuries reported to the crew aboard the tanker either. The vessel dropped anchor in pos. 40° 29.12' N 073° 36.45' W off New York for investigations of the Coast Guard New York and the declaration that it was safe to continue into port afterreviewing class reports.
