Bulk carrier caused oil pollution
The government of Solomon Island was accusing the 'Quebec' for intentionally releasing heavy fuel oil(HFO) off the valuable Graciosa Bay in the Temotu Province. The ship had arrived at Graciosa Bay to pick up a load of logs on Jan 20, 2021, for a Chinese company. The head of Solomon Islands Maritime Authority (SIMA) accused the crew of deliberately discharging oil. The island government sent out a technical assessment team to the site to identify the extent of the pollution. On close examination, it became clear that the ship has spilt or dumped 1,000 liters.
Vessel detained for sea pollution
The Solomon Islands' authorities stated on Feb 11, 2021, that they will prosecute the Master of the 'Quebec' for discharging oil in a remote and pristine part of the country. The bulk carrier was detained in the Temotu Province after islanders spotted dead fish on their coastline and an oil slick stretching over two kilometres. The Solomon Islands Maritime Authority (SIMA) Director discovered that heavy fuel oil and oily water was released into the sea during a clean-up on board. The clean-up was mismanaged in the engine room when the crew members opened a fire hydrant on deck and the pump discharged the oil into the sea. The quantity of oil was yet to be determined, but it was enough to create the oil slick that damaged marine life along the coast.
