Abused crew member of fishing vessel rescued by bulk carrier after three days in the water

Thu Dec 12 09:50:34 CET 2024 Timsen

On Dec 11, 2024, an SAR operation was carried out to rescue Afif Efendy, 37, a crew member who had been forced to jump over board from the fishing vessel 'Putri Ayu' on Dec 8. The new crew member, had been subjected to abuse by the older crew members who did not accept him. He was physically assaulted, kicked, and threatened by several other crew members, working from 08:00 a.m. until nightfall without any rest. Due to ongoing threats from the older crew members who told him to jump overboard or face being killed, the victim had become frightened and stressed. On the 17th day of the voyage, two crew members threatened him with a knife and forced him to jump into the sea. Terrified, the victim put on a life jacket and jumped into the water during the night. He spent three days adrift at sea before being discovered by the 'Sikiinos, en route from Newcastle to Singapore. He was transferred aboard the patrol boat KN 'P 349' at 8 p.m. WIB and brought to Semayang Harbor for further medical treatment.
