Bulkcarrier with flooded engine room off Cape Town
The "Sheng Ming", loaded with iron ore, was troubled off Cape Town, where she was towed by a tug after her engine room got flooded. The ship had loaded her cargo at Pepel Transshipment Area and sailed from Pepel on March 30, 2018, bound for Port Elizabeth, ETA Apr 17. She was disabled on Apr 12 off the Namibian coast. On Apr 14 she was taken in tow to Cape Town. On Apr 24 when being about 40 miles north of Cape Town, the towage stopped. On Apr 27 at 2 a.m. two tugs attended the distressed bulk carrier from Cape Town, the "SA Amandla" (IMO: 7385215) and the "Maersk Tender" (IMO: 9388651) which took the bulkcarrier in tow and was waiting 12 miles outside Cape Town port limits, awaiting permission from port authorities to enter port. Probably the condition of the vessel had deteriorated, and it was not allowed to be taken to Cape Town but remained on the anchorage for the time being. The "SA Amandla" could meanwhile be stood down.
