In the harbour canal of Duisburg the river cruise ship "River Navigator" (EU-No.: 04804650) was in collision with the "Sempachersee", 1547 ts (EU-No.: 02331941), in the morning of Feb 16, 2016, at 10.15 a.m. during a trial of the river cruise ship after an overhaul in the Ruhrorter Port. Aboard the ship were only the crew and technicians of the yard. After a rudder failure the ship became unmanoeverable and hit the tank barge in the canal before being caught by the river current and running aground on the opposite side of the Rhine at river km 781 at the Homberger shore. The "River Navigator" had suffered a breach of three meters length in the bow at port side and started to spill oil from a damaged tank of the bow thruster. The fire rescue was on scene with several engines and a fire boat. The ship was surrounded by an oil boom and the spill from the breached diesel tank could be stopped. About one ton gas oil leaked out before the tank was drained. The "River Navigator" could be pulled out at 5.30 p.m. It was yet to be decided, whether the sand of the contaminated shore was to be removed. Also the tank barge whoich had been enroute from Millingen to Antwerp suffered significant damage, bollards were broken out of the deck at port side. The damage was assessed to be more than 100.000 Euro.
