Man fell to death while working on elevator

A man died on June 16, 2012, after he fell down an elevator shaft on the "Rio de Janeiro Express". The accident happened at 10:49 a.m. when he fell 25 feet down an elevator shaft while working on top of the elevator. He slipped, fell down and pinned himself between the elevator and elevator shaft before someone was lowered down to free him. He was taken to street level via a ladder bucket. The ship was berthed at the New York Container Terminal at Howland Hook in Mariners Harbor at that time. The man was transferred to Richmond University Medical Center in s critical traumatic arrest after he was freed by firefighters from Rescue 5. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the West Brighton hospital. He had a severe leg injury, among other trauma.
