Was incident with tanker a terrorist attack?

Fri Nov 04 09:52:52 CET 2016 Timsen

Teekay has now conducted an investigation of the incident with the "Galicia Spirit" on Oct 25 with security experts. indicating that a skiff that engaged in an attack on the tanker, using small arms was also carrying a substantial amount of explosives. While the intentions of the attackers and the use of the explosives was still unknown, the investigation findings indicated that the explosives would have been sufficient to have caused significant damage to the vessel. It appeared, however, that when the skiff was approximately 20 meters from the vessel, the explosives detonated, destroying the skiff and ending the attack. No details have emerged of how many attackers there were, or what happened to them, but maritime sources said the information to date indicated this was probably not piracy. The incident happened while the tanker passed Perim Island, between the coast of Djibouti and Yemen. No injures were reported, the tanker suffered small damages. The tanker was en route from Qatar to Egypt and berthed in Ain Sukhna on Oct 29.

Teekay Gas Carrier Attacked by Pirates Near Key Shipping Lane Off Yemen

Thu Oct 27 10:35:59 CEST 2016 arnekiel

LONDON, Oct 26 (Reuters) – Unknown assailants attacked a gas tanker off the coast of Yemen close to the Bab al-Mandab waterway in the latest flare up in an area through which much of the world’s oil passes, shipping and security officials said on Wednesday. The incident, the first attack on a commercial ship since July, followed missile attacks in recent weeks on military craft, including U.S. navy vessels, which were launched from Yemen that had already raised risks for merchant shipping. Shipping group Teekay said its LNG (liquefied natural gas) tanker Galicia Spirit “experienced a suspected piracy attack whilst off the coast of Yemen” on Oct. 25. “No third parties managed to board the vessel during the incident and all crew members are safe and have been accounted for,” Teekay said in a statement. https://gcaptain.com/teekay-gas-carrier-attacked-near-key-shipping-lane-off-yemen/
