Oil spill after sinking
Authorities in Russia have reported an oil spill resulting from the sinking of the 'Seamark' that left one person dead in the Black Sea. The Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources confirmed the discharge of diesel fuel following the breaking apart and sinking of the vessel off Novorossiysk on Feb 21. The oil spill that ultimately stretched for over 1.5 kilometres. However, authorities have yet to determine the total volume of diesel that had leaked into the sea. The vessel had around 7.5 tonnes of diesel in its fuel tanks when it sank. Divers continued to surveythe wreckage to determine whether the ship’s cargo of calcite had also spilled into the surrounding waters.
One died after ship broke in two and sank
The 'Seamark', loaded with 3,000 tons of marble chips, broke in two and sank at Novorossiysk anchorage on Feb 21, 2023. The last AIS signal dated from 09.55 UTC. Of the 11 Russian crew members, one died after his rescue on board of ra escue vessel, another one was in critical condition. The ship arrived had at the anchorage on Feb 15 en route from Iskenderun.
