Bucin intercepted with 333 migrants

Tue Jan 20 09:45:30 CET 2015 Timsen

In the night of Jan 19, 2015, the Turkish Coast Guard intercepted the "Burcin" with 333 migrants, mainly Syrians, on board, off the Turkish coast after authorities got a tip-off. The vessel had left Mersin and was to take the migrants to Italy. The migrants had been delivered to the freighter by small boats off Mersin. In an operation employing over 300 coastguard personnel, the coastguard captured the vessel in open water after surveillance showed that the vessel's crew had loaded an unusually high amount of blankets, pillows and food. The ship was taken back to Mersin, where the migrants were disembarked. One of the boats used for boarding tried to escape and was later apprehended by the authorities. Four Turks and 11 Syrians, suspected in human trafficking, were arrested.
