Drunken master nearly crashed ship in Helsingborg
The "San Remo" got three miles off its course nearly crashed against the pier in Helsingborg in the evening of Apr 5, 2014. Several ships tried to warn the captain, who did not respond to any calls. The ship was crossing the busy fairway between Helsingborg and Elsinore with nine knots. At the last minute it turned away and headed southward. Crew members of the Coast Guard vessel "KBV o34" boarded the ship just south of Råå and found that the captain, a 58 year old Russian, was drunk. They measured an amount of alcohol in the breath of 0.29 mg/l corresponding to 0.58 per thousand. He was fined with 16000 Swedish crowns the same evening for drinking at the helm and gross negligence. The ship was carrying rapeseed meal and was en route from Falkenberg to Kalmar when the event occurred. The Chief Officer took over its command. The vessel docked at Swinoujscie in the Wolin port on Apr 6 short before midnight.
