Deadly accident on factory deck

Wed Nov 14 12:08:40 CET 2018 Timsen

A crew member of the "San Granit", Stefan Antony Stewart from New Plymouth, died after being injured on the factory deck near Banks Peninsula in Canterbury on Nov 15, 2018, at 4 a.m. The Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) has opened an inquiry into the factory fishing vessel about 88 kilometres east of Banks Peninsula. The Rescue Coordination Centre notified TAIC of the incident. The ship arrived at the Timaru port in the afternoon. The death was not suspicious and would be referred to the coroner. Two investigators went on board after the ship docked. The facts of what happened were still being established. The family has been advised and was offered every support. While the TAIC investigation would focus on safety, Maritime NZ would focus on legislation.
