Cargo ship adrift in Bothnian Sea
The 'Sampogracht' sailing in ballast condition from Flushing to Rauma with 15 crew members on board, was disabled and adrift in the Bothnian Sea in the early evening of Jan 12, 2020. After the main engine overheated and failed, it started drifting towards the coast with a speed of 1,5 knots. The crew tried to fix the problem on the spot but initially failed. Only after a long battle, the ship regained its main engine on Jan 13 at 4.25 a.m. and was able to continue its journey towards the port of Rauma with a speed of seven knots. The Turku Marine Rescue Center continued to monitor the vessel's movements. There was no immediate danger to the ship, but the breezy wind made it difficult to assist the ship. The MRCC alerted the patrol vessel 'Uisko', which would have carried out an emergency towing if necessary. However, due to the large size of the ship, moving it would have been a challenge. On the last leg of the journey the ship was taken in tow by the tugs 'Jupiter' (IMO: 9287431), and 'Saturn' (IMO: 9315410), from Rauma in order to tow it to a berth at the Rauma Container Terminal at 9.40 a.m. She left the port again on Jan 16 at 8.20 p.m., headed to Eemshaven with an ETA as of Jan 19.
