Ship arrested due to unpaid debts
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry is trying to find out the circumstances of the detention of the "Sakhalin" with the Ukrainian-Russian crew in Hong Kong since Jan 22, 2012. They instructed the Ukrainian embassy in Beijing to clear up the details and circumstances of this case. The vessel was detained for unknown reasons in Hong Kong. There were 16 citizens of Ukraine and five citizens of Russia on board who demand they should be paid wage debts and their return home should be paid for by the owner. They have filed a suit against the company that employed them. A lawyer provided by the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) is currently working with them. The ship is at anchor in Hong Kong, the port authorities do not allow anyone to go ashore. According to the crew members, the vessel has no fuel, no air conditioning and no ventilation, meager stocks of food and fresh water.
