Repairs to last until Mid-June
The repair work on the "Sagar Sampada" which was undertaken by about three contractors of the owners, the Shipping Corporation of India, was progressing well at the Q10 berth of the Cochin port Some of the power cables intended for replacement were still being awaited, as they had to be imported. The work of the damaged bulkheads, fabrication of steel sheets, pipes for replacement was also underway. The owners were expecting the repairs to be completed by mid-June 2019 for undertaking research work with the onset of the southwest monsoon in the western coast of India. Repairs were completed and clearance received as well as sea trails conducted as of June 21, and the vessel was ready to sail.
Repairs in Cochin underway
The "Sagar Sampada" on March 22 berthed at Q10 berth of Cochin port for repairs by one of the empanelled contractors of the vessel's owners. The repairs were mainly focused on change of damaged power/RF cables running through the fire-damaged cabin area. The repairs of the burnt bulkheads wree also being explored upon from various repair agencies and most probably would be repaired at one of the yards in Colombo. After the repair of the bulkheads, cable looms wired on to the damaged bulkheads will be undertaken.
Research ship on fire
The "Sagar Sampada", engaged in research works, caught fire on March 15, 2019, at 10 p.m. 35 miles off Mangalore, Western India, with 36 crew members and 16 scientists on board. Two ships of Indian Coast Guard , the ICGS "Sujay" and ICGS "Vikram", were deployed to assist and managed to extinguish the fire. The "Vikram" undertook boundary cooling uon the affected area using its external fire fighting systems. A joint fire fighting team of both ships in protective gears and breathing apparatus was able to enter the accommodation area at 1:30 a.m. and contained the fire. Other merchant vesslels in the area also responded and offered assistance. About eight comparments of the accomodation area were damaged.
