Crew abandoned ship
The crew of nine on board the "Rona" was safely evacuated from the ship which was being pounded by severe seas on the beach on Jan 28 between 6.30 and 7.30 p.m.
Salvage attempts underway
Salvage work in order to refloat the "Rona" grounded 6 miles west of Kilyos on Jan 27 has started on Jan 28 as the situation of the vessel worsened and the master requested assistance. The tug "Kiyem 1" and the "Kurtama 10" have started salvage work. Grounding in the Bosphorus
Enroute Tuzla-Varna the "Rona" which had sheltered off Kilyos due to strong wind, but dragged anchor and went adrift on Jan 27, 2012, at 05:43 a.m., finally running aground six miles west of Kilyos in pos. 41 17'3 50'2 N 028o E and ran aground in the surf. The Istanbul Vessel Traffic Service sent the Coast Guard rescue boats "Kıyı Emniyeti 9" and "Kıyem 1" as well as the tug "Kurtarma 10". The ship was unloaded and had a crew of 9 Bulgarians. Rescue teams were also sent from Kilyos and Karaburun, but the captain did not accept help but waited for orders of the shipowners. The "Kıyı Emniyeti 9" and "Kıyem 1" remained standing by, as well as resue personnel on the beach of Karaburun including one ranger unimog.
