Container ship blocked from entering Valparaiso by protesting fishermen

Fri Mar 28 12:21:39 CET 2025 Timsen

The 'Rio de Janeiro Express' was among the vessels, which fishermen in Valparaíso and San Antonio blocked in protest on March 27, 2025. The vessel was scheduled to dock after 1:00 p.m. at berth No. 3, operated by the Terminal Pacífico Sur (TPS)."They won't enter. May the government, once and for all, help us," the protesters stated during the fishermen's protest against the fractionation law. The fishermen stated: “Right now, we, the fishermen of Valparaíso, Quintero, Horcón, Portales, Membrillo, San Pedro, etc., are halting the traffic of merchant vessels,” they stated. They also directly challenged the Executive Branch. These protests are taking place within the framework of the legislative discussion on the “Subdivision Law.” In response, the Chilean Navy, specifically the Valparaíso Port Captaincy, were in the process of regularizing this blockade. Meanwhile, the undocking of the container ship 'Maersk Bintan' from berth No. 1, also managed by TPS, was scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m., but this was delayed too. No other vessel was expected to call at the port until March 28 at 8:30 p.m. Meanwhile, the three berths operated by Terminal Portuario Valparaíso (TPV) were occupied by the reefer' Italia Stream', the bulk carrier 'Ocean Jasmina', and the cruise ship 'SH Vega'. The former will remain moored until March 30, and the latter until April 1, while the third was scheduled to depart on March 27 at 6:00 p.m. Artisanal fishermen were also blocking the Port of San Antonio by sea with more than 20 vessels. The protest measure prevents ships from entering or leaving.
