New gate wings installed
On Jan 24, shortly after 8 a.m., work began on installing the new lock gate wings in Müden. The gate wings had to be loaded onto a truck with the help of a crane for the last few meters to the lock chamber. The truck slowly reversed towards the chamber and another crane then lowered the gates. One of them weighs around 41 tonnes. It was important when installing that the two wing gates fitted exactly into the lock chamber. Around 40 employees were involved in the installation work. In the next few days, the technology will be installed so that the gate can open and close properly. The first test locks are due to begin in about a week. The new lock gate with two gate wings has stored been on a cargo ship at the lock in Müden for a week. Before that, it spent two days on the Moselle from Trier to Müden. That's where the two wings, which together make a steel gate 12 meters high, 14 meters wide and weighing around 80 tons, were constructed in the recent weeks. The old gates will be transported back to Trier. What can still be used from the swing gates will be recycled and the rest will be scrapped. The ' Regina K' has berthed in Haren/Ems on Jan 18. New lock gate arrived in Müden
The new lock gate, weighing around 80 tons, has arrived at the damaged Mosel lock in Müden on Jan 17, and was now waiting on a barge to be installed. Only when it has been successfully installed can shipping on the Moselle be resumed. Shipping has been paralyzed since the 'Regina K' smashed the old gate on Dec 8, 2024. Work on the damaged lock is currently still underway. When all the concrete work is finished, the scaffolding will be dismantle. The barge with the 12-meter-high and 14-meter-wide lock gate will be at a mooring at the lock until then. The new gate is expected to be lifted off and installed in a week. After that, it will take about another week to align it, set up the connections and program it. The tests will then be carried out at the end of the January, after which the ships should finally be able to travel continuously on the Moselle again. New gates for damaged lock completed
The new gates for the lock in Müden have been completed, and they were loaded onto a ship in Trier-Zewen on Jan 14. They will then be brought to Müden on Jan 15. The gate fis 12 meters high, 14 meters wide and weighs 80 tons. It consists of two parts. Early on the morning, work began on loading the two gate wings onto a ship at the construction yard of the Waterways and Shipping Office in Trier-Zewen with a crane. Normally, the construction of the replacement gate for the lock in Müden would have taken much longer. The fact that things went so quickly was mainly due to the fact that many employees in the Waterways and Shipping Office's construction yard worked overtime after the 'Regina K' had crashed into the lock gate in Müden and severely damaged it. Work on the defective lock progressed well. The defective parts were removed and the damaged concrete parts were re-cast. The ship will then set off towards Müden on Jan 15. The journey across the Moselle takes about one and a half days, so the gates will arrive on Jan 17. However, the gate cannot be installed until the end of next week because the concrete work on the barrage will be ongoing until then. The work is due to be completed at the beginning of February. Only then will normal ship traffic be possible on the Moselle again, around a month earlier than originally planned.
