Tanker and crew detained for alleged oil smuggle
Four people have been handcuffed by the Durrës police after they transported 2275 tons of contraband oil from Libya to Albania aboard the 'Queen Majeda', which was stopped on Sep 12, 2022. Six of their associates were under investigation. As a result of the operation coded "Ring", the persons identified as: Zuhair Alkuafi (captain of the ship) 54 years old, Muajid Altabir, 25 years old, Amad Abushala, 43 years old, all three residents of Libya and Badar Tezini, 25, were arrested in the act. The tanker, the amount of oil and some mobile devices were seized. The materials were passed to the Prosecution at the Court of the Durrës Judicial District, for further action, for the criminal offenses "Smuggling of goods for which excise duty is paid", "Storage or deposit of contraband goods" and "Smuggling of the captain, pilot or crew", of carried out in cooperation. The operation took place after several months of investigation by the Criminal Police Department of the State Police, the Durres Local Police Directorate and the Durres Border Police, with the support of the Durres Maritime Captaincy, the Coast Guard and the Durres Port Authority, under the direction of the Durres Judicial District Prosecutor's Office.
Grounding off Rhodes
The "Taxiarchis" ran aground on a sandy shallow at the northwest coast of Rhodes in the morning of Mar 15, 2015, with a crew of nine and an inspector on board. The tanker was enroute from Rhodes to Symi, and on scene were winds of 4-5 Beaufort. A Greek lifeboat went on standby after the grounding. The vessel was refloated the same day with the help of two tugs and taken to Rhodes port, no leak was reported by the Ministry of Shipping. On Mar 16 at 3 a.m. the tanker was docked in Rhodes.
