Assistance for distressed yacht
The crew of the "Professor Molchanov" jointly with the research vessel "Akademik Nikolai Strakhov" assisted the distressed s/y "Kreiser" which had departed from Arkhangelsk for the Novaya Zemlya Archipelago on July 29, 2019. Probably a rope got jammed in the ship's propeller, disabling it, and a storm made things worse. The crew issued a distress signal. The "Professor Molchanov" received a fax about the mayday signal on July 30 and immediately contacted the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center, which issued orders to call off the planned activities and join the "Akademik Strakhov", which was the first to come to the rescue of the boat. The distressed boat and the "Akademik Strakhov" were drifting strong winds and 4 to 5-meter high waves. The "Akademik Strakhov" managed to take the distressed boat in tow, but the line was broken off due to the high waves together with the strong winds of up to 20 meters per second. Around 04 a.m. on July 31, the "Professor Molchanov" approached the distressed boat as closely as was safely possible and transferred a portable transmitter and a line to the vessel, which was towed to the receiving buoy in Arkhangelsk. Chief weatherman of Murmansk accused of power abuse
Murmansk prosecutors raised charges against the director of Murmansk monitoring centre for weather and environment. Vessel "Professor Molchanov" owned by the state-run establishment was rented out for tourists and used for worldwide cruises, Barentsnova reports. The vessel named Professor Molchanov has been at disposal of the Murmansk monitoring centre since 1982 for weather sampling in the Arctic areas. In 1997, the centre concluded a charter rental agreement with a Cyprus-based company for the survey vessel. First agreement was concluded for three years and was repeatedly prolongated; the latest version is valid till September 2011. Alongside with the fact that the centre is not allowed to rent out property owned by the state, the case is aggravated by misappropriation of the rent fees. Regional attorneys claim the losses exceed 48 million RUB. A criminal action has been initiated against Anatoly Semenov according to Art 286 of Russian Legal Code - abuse of power. http://barentsnova.com/node/1187
