US Navy sends retrofitted USS PONCE from Norfolk to Middle East
The US Navy sent a retrofitted ship on June 1st, 2012 to the Middle East, where it will act as a floating base for helicopters, coastal patrol ships and special forces for the next two to three years. The USS PONCE was an amphibious transport dock that was scheduled for decommissioning in March. But the Navy decided it could transform the ship into what it calls an afloat forward staging base. In short, the ship will act as a dedicated mother ship for other units in the area that may need it, such as mine counter-measure ships. The ship is expected to remain at sea without returning to port for the duration of its deployment.
