Oil spill fighting off Corsica
The 'Pionnier' along with the naval tug 'Jason' was trying to contain a pollution off Corsica on July 12, 2021, after the appearance of oil slicks off the coast. They were most likely illegal pumped out from a ship. The drift was pushing the pollution away from the Corsican, and it was about ten kilometers offshore in the evening. The 'BSSA Pionnier' which arrived from Toulon, has on board multiple anti-pollution resources and was working off Solenzara. An oil boom was laid out jointly with the tug 'Altagna'. Beaches were closed, fishing prohibited and significant coastal protection resources on land and at sea deployed after the spill was discovered during a military air exercise off Solenzara on July 11. The presence of heavy hydrocarbons, which are difficult to dissolve, and the extent of the two oil slicks, prompted the authorities to launch the Polmar-Terre coastal protection plan on July 12, which also included action on the coasts. It remains maintained. The prefect of Haute-Corse has banned access to beaches for some 40 kilometers, between the municipalities of Aleria as far as Ventiseri. Fishing was also prohibited in these same sectors. An investigation was opened and entrusted to the maritime gendarmerie. "Degasing hydrocarbons at sea is a pure act of ecological delinquency," denounced the Minister of Ecological Transition Barbara Pompili, who visited the site with the Minister of the Sea Annick Girardin. It was one of the most significant outgassing pollution observed over the past three years in this Mediterranean area.
