Cable layer arrived for repairs of cable
After the 'Peria' suffered an engine failure, lost power, and emergency dropped anchor in order to avoid grounding at Kecilik Bay, Turkiye on Jan 21, getting entangled with the underwater fibre-optic communication cable line, which was seriously damaged , the cable ship 'Antonio Meucci' (IMO: 8506062) has been appointed and attended Istanbul in the morning of Feb 3. The cable layer and a technical team will attend the incident site depending on Strait traffic and weather permission. A detailed damage survey and method of repair was to be provided by the technicians. The tankers's departure permission has yet to be issued by the harbour master due to an incomplete technical damage survey and the cable layer's further findings. The amount of "LOU" (Letter of Undertaken) was to be requested as a result of further surveys and technical reports. The vessel has to pay salvage expenses and impose a fine on the Coastal Safety account prior to departure. The vessel remains stationary at Ambarli anchorage as of Feb 5.
Blacklisted tanker damaged fiber optic cables in Bosphorus
The 'Peria', en route from Primorsk to Izmir, accidently dropped the anchor in the Keçilik Bay off Rumelikavağı during the transit of the Bosphorus in the foremidday of Jan 21, 2024. It fell on the fiber optic cables at the bottom of the waterway, which had to be temporarily closed to other shipping traffic. Attempts to free the anchor were made in vain for seven hours. Then it was cut off on the captain's orders. Meanwhile, the tug 'Kurtarma 17' (IMO: 9598608) secured the vessel in pos 41° 11.31' N 029° 05.48' E, joined by the lifeboat 'Kiyi Eminyeti 18'. The tugs 'Kurtarma 8' (IMO: 9598610) and 'Kurtarma 7' (IMO: 9598608) were later added to assist the tanker. At 4:40 p.m. the vessel was able to maneuver again and headed for an anchorage near Küçükçekmece, where it dropped anchor in pos. 40° 56.97' N 028° 45.16' E. The 'Peria' is on the black list of US-sanctioned tankers in connection with this with the Russian war against Ukraine. Photos: https://twitter.com/kiyiemniyet/status/1749009226775646282
