Petrozavodsk remains to disinegrate
The "Petrozavodsk" will remain at the seabird colonies on Bjørnøya (Bear Island) to disintegrate. Dismantling would be too dangerous because of weather and risks for life. The wreck is now in two parts, andthe deck is about to collapse. Witin estimated 10-15 years the whole ship will disintegrate. The ship was emptied of oil and fuel in 2009, the Coast guard believes that the ship no longer poses a major environmental risk. PETROZAVODSK 8016457
The Governor of Svalbard recommends that the wreck of the ”Petrozavodsk” which ran on ground on the coast of the far northern Bear Island in May 2009, should be removed. The wreck is situated right in the middle of the breeding area of large sea bird colonies. The wreck broke in two pieces last winter and started to fall apart. It contains dangerous environmental poisons that will not disintegrate in nature or disintegrate very slowly. The Governor of Svalbard, Odd Olsen Ingerø, thus recommends that the wreck should be emptied of remaining pollutants and removed.
