Ship banned after stowaway with malaria was found on board

Thu Nov 19 10:16:50 CET 2015 Timsen

An African stowaway, aged 22, was found with malaria aboard the "Saturnus" Santos. In the afternoon of Nov 18, 2015, he was taken to the Portuguese Charity Hospital, accompanied by inspectors of the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) and federal police. He will remain hospitalized and will undergo further tests. The vessel remained banned and unable to operate in the Santos dock. Anvisa personnel collected blood samples of the 21 crew members. The results were expected on Nov 19. The "Saturnus" will have to meet sanitary requirements in order to be issued the document known as the Free Practice (LP) - which will allow the loading of 48000 tons of sugar. It must install thermometers for refrigerators, bins, replace air filters and remove waste. Saturnus finally left waters of Yemen

Thu May 21 10:14:59 CEST 2015 Timsen

On May 18, 2015, the "Saturnus" with its 22 Indian crew members was finally able to leave the port of Hodeidah after waiting to unload a cargo of wheat since Apr 7. The reason that the ship was not able to berth were ongoing battles of Saudi-led forces against Houthi militia in Yeme. The shipping company got the message from the Saudi-led forces that anything could happen if the ship docked. At the same time the charterer claimed that the situation in the port was normal and that the ship could safely enter. But the situation was not normal because the port was blocked by a ship from the Saudi-led coalition forces. On one occasion soldiers went on board the ship. The crew had to sit on the deck with their hands in the air. The delay has cost the shipping company more than 1,5 million dollars, and it was not ruled out that the case could get a legal aftermath.
