Fuel in grounded tug may endanger national park
The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection ordered the owners of the "Palo de Tinte" and "Tabasco 406", grounded at the Parque Arrecife Alacranes in Yucatán, to remove the wrecks in order to prevent destruction of corals in the park 120 kilometers north Yucatan. The "Tabasco 406" ran aground in February 2012, initially damaging 300 meters of coral, but in four years has destroyed 2500 meters of protected species. The owner of the 30-tons-boat which is 15 meters long has paid a fine of 1,5 million pesos. The company owning the "Tabasco 406" has failed so far to take action and so a complaint was filed by Profepa in Yucatan. The "Palo da Tinte" also remains aground in Arrecife Alacranes and damaged 300 meters of coral so far. Profepa and the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas said the danger was that the vessel still has fuel in its tanks and the company 'Marinsa' has not removed it yet.
