Ablaze and abandoned off Colon, Panama Canal
Tanker Otilia caught fire at around 03:00 LT July 10 13 on approaches to Colon, Panama Canal, Atlantic side. Fire erupted in engine room and spread further, crew tried to fight fire, but failed and abandoned vessel on a life raft. Some 1.5 hours later crew was picked up by a patrol boat. Eye witness reported no fire fighting attempts in sight. Tug Capo Noli is standing by, monitoring situation but not fighting fire. Whether vessel has some cargo on board or not, is unknown. Tanker left Colon on July 9 bound for Kingston, Jamaica. Tanker presumably, is engaged in bunkering operations in Colon.
