Container ship nearly ran over migrant boat

Thu Jan 24 12:08:03 CET 2019 Timsen

On Jan 21, 2019, a helicopter of the Air Service of the Civil Guard in the frame of the Operation Indalo of the European Agency FRONTEX, managed to avoid that the "Siroja Tiga" ran over a boat with 11 sub-Saharan immigrants 11 miles south of the Camarinal point in the Strait of Gibraltar. The helicopter after detecting the craft made an approach maneuver to check its condition, noting that it was half-sunken and the immigrants making gestures with their arms asking for help. The Central Operative of the Civil Guard sent a vessel of the Maritime Service of the Civil Guard and notified the Maritime Rescue. While the crew of the helicopter hovered around the boat, they noted that the container ship was approaching from the southwest and was on collision course. The helicopter crew in vain tried to contact the ship. Faced with the risk of collision and without having received a response from the ship, the helicopter orbited near the bridge to alert the crew. They were giving light signals so that the ship altered its course and avoid the collision, making a turn to port. The immigrantswererescued by a vessel from the Maritime Service of the Civil Guard supported by another of Maritime Rescue and taken to Algeciras.
