Containership assisted distressed fishermen
The "Limari" assisted the distressed f/v "María Esther" from Venezuela off La Guajira. The f/v had left the port of Puerto Barcadera on May 19, 2017, bound to Puerto Nuevo, but had suffered an engine failure. The Curacao Emergency Center received a mayday call on May 21. The Colombian Navy launched a search operation involving ships in sea area. In the evening of May 26, the Cartagena Coast Guard Station received a message from a ship that had captured another radio message from the "María Esther" with its approximate coordinates, and an Air Force SR 560 could locate the boat 200 miles off the coast. The port captain of Puerto Bolívar And the Center of Operations contacted the nearby "Limari", which was on the way from Fort Lauderdale to Colon, to provide the crew with food and water. The navy sent the "7 de Agosto" to rescue the eight crew members, and after the arrival on May 29, the fishermen decided to go aboard the Navy vessel, where they were given medical care due to burns and dehydration. The fishermen were brought to Cartagena, and the Coast Guard contacted the boat owner, who intended to have the abandoned boat towed to Riohacha for repairs.
