11 containers fell into Oakland's Outer Harbor
11 empty containers fell off the "MOL Maxim" into the Port of Oakland's Outer Harbor in the afternoon of Sep 21, 2017, in the area of berths 25 and 26, along the Outer Harbor Chanel, not far from the Bridge Toll Plaza. The ship had docked in the night in Middle Harbor. The Coast Guard received a report at 2:46 p.m. 10 of the containers sank, stretched in an area along the dock at a water depth of 50 feet. Divers were tasked with pinpointing the location of the submerged containers. A crane was to arrive around noon and begin the salvage of the containers. It could take all day, but the goal is to have all 11 containers back on the dock.Besides the Coast Guard, the Bar Pilots Association was notified of the incident so they were aware of the locations of the containers and could help guide vessel traffic. It was unclear what caused the containers to fall from the vessel, and the Coast Guard launched an investigation. The Port of Oakland did not antipate any disruptions of ship traffic.
