Germanischer Lloyd (GL) certifies LNG-fuelled tanker ‘Bit Viking’ as ‘clean’
Germanischer Lloyd has undertaken a clean shipping index (CSI) verification for the product tanker ‘Bit Viking’, issuing a Statement of Compliance for the LNG-fuelled ship based on data submitted by owner Tarbit Shipping. GL says this indicates that Bit Viking meets the requirements of the Index, an essential step for ensuring the usefulness and transparency of the data provided for the new project. The Bit Viking, a 25,000dwt product tanker, is the first vessel in service whose main machinery has been converted to burn LNG as fuel and also the largest commercial vessel which is not an LNG tanker, to use LNG as fuel.
Wärtsilä Completes First Vessel Conversion to LNG Operation
Wärtsilä Oy has completed its first vessel conversion from heavy fuel oil to liquefied natural gas (LNG) operation. LNG fueled engines produce produce lower carbon oxide emissions and virtually no sulphur oxide or particle emissions. The vessel, the product tanker ‘Bit Viking’, is now able to qualify for lower nitrogen oxide (NOX) emission taxes under the Norwegian NOX fund scheme. Completed in October, the ‘Bit Viking’ was handed over to the customer, Tarbit Shipping, for operation by Statoil along the Norwegian coastline. http://www.ngvglobal.com/wartsila-completes-first-vessel-conversion-to-lng-1124

The 25,000 DWT product tanker "Bit Viking" will be converted to run on LNG. It will then be the first ship with Germanischer Lloyd (GL) class using gas as fuel. The ship will be retro-fitted with a dual fuel Wärtsilä engine. Sea trials are planned for May 2011. Source: GL Link: http://www.gl-group.com/en/press/news_20891.php
