No trace of missing animal rights activist on board sheep carrier

Tue Mar 06 10:33:28 CET 2012 Timsen

A direct action animal rights group, who evaded port security to board the "Ocean Shearer" in Fremantle, said they didn't know if a renegade member of the group was still on the ship as its headed to the Middle East. Six members of the Animal Action arm of the conservation group Forest Rescue boarded the "Ocean Shearer" at 3a.m. on MAr 4, 2012, by climbing up the vessel's stern ropes. The group boarded the ship in order to look for evidence of animal cruelty. The missing member of the group was on his first protest with Animal Action but had broken ranks and disappeared while on the vessel. He was last seen on the ship at around 1 p.m. A police spokeswoman said no reports of a missing person had been received. Other members of the group spent up to six hours on the ship, with one member locking herself onto the vessel using thumb cuffs. A spokesman for shipping company Wellard said the "Ocean Shearer" had been searched thoroughly before sailing and the missing protestor did not appear to be aboard. Inspections of the animals' health and condition would routinely be made prior to loading and sailing.
