Medevac off Cold Bay

A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter, deployed from Cold Bay, medevaced a 25-30-year-old man from the "Ocean Phoenix" 85 miles northwest of Cold Bay on Feb 26, 2014. Watchstanders at the Coast Guard 17th District command center in Juneau received the request for medevac from the master of the "Ocean Phoenix" when a crewman suffered a severe injury to his left hand. The Coast Guard duty flight surgeon was contacted and concurred with the need for the medevac. The helicopter transported the man to the Cold Bay where they were met by commercial medevac services for further transport to Providence Medical Center in Anchorage. Weather conditions at the time of the incident were reported as 35 mph winds and 10-foot seas.

A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew medevaced an injured mariner from the "Ocean Phoenix" 70 miles northwest of Cold Bay on Feb 12, 2014. In the afternoon the Coast Guard Communication Station Kodiak received a call from the master of the vessel who reported that the 25-year-old female crewmember was suffering from chest pains and needed medical assistance. Watchstanders at the Coast Guard 17th District Command Center directed the launch of a Jayhawk helicopter crew from a forward operating location in Cold Bay.The helicopter crew safely transported the patient to emergency medical services in Cold Bay for a commercial flight to Anchorage. Weather on scene was reported as 27 degrees, wind speed at 26 mph, visibility at 3.5 miles and snowing.
