Mega yacht damaged in bridge allision
The "Rockstar" on Dec 2, 2014, allided with a drawbridge on the Broad Causeway in Fort Lauderdale, closing it to traffic in both directions for nearly six hours. The yacht was being towed from Fort Lauderdale to Miami. She was being moved by two tugs, one pulling and the other pushing it, when, around 3:45 p.m., the east part of the bridge made contact with the mega yacht. The tow company had requested the bridge tender to raise both sides so it could pass. As the ship passed through, the east side of the drawbridge suddenly started to slip and crashed down on the yacht, taking out part of the roof causing considerable damage. The whole flybridge of the vessel and top portion suffered damage. The "Rockstar" remained trapped for more than 20 minutes before it finally became dislodged and was towed away north of the bridge. There were 15 persons on board the vessel at the time of the incident. No one was injured. Inclement weather may have played a factor in the incident. Officers of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission were looking to see exactly what occurred. Authorities diverted traffic, which was backed up to Sans Souci Boulevard in North Miami. They advised drivers to seek alternate routes. Crews on scene inspected the bridge to determine whether it was operational and to assess any structural damage it may have sustained. Engineers of the Town of Bay Harbor islands tested it to make sure the causeway was safe for traffic again. The yacht docked at a Dania Beach marina, where investigators were figuring out how much damage was caused. The causeway reopened around 9:30 p.m. Reports with photos: http://www.wsvn.com/story/27530048/yacht-collides-with-broad-causeway-bridge-no-injuries http://www.wtsp.com/story/news/local/florida/2014/12/02/part-of-miami-drawbridge-crashes-down-on-mega-yacht/19804491/ http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2858581/Luxury-superyacht-named-Rockstar-worth-20MILLION-collides-faulty-drawbridge-Florida.html#ixzz3KpUMs9wx
