Cargo loss off Galicia

Sat Jan 18 12:21:35 CET 2020 Timsen

On Jan 14, 2020, the 'Pemba' lost part of her deck cargo in stormy weather with wave heights of more than six meters and wind speeds of 140 miles per hour off the Costa da Morte in Galician waters after the fastenings had loseend off the islend of Cíes. The ship was en route from Ceuta to Szczecin, when eight steel construction pontoons went overboard, remaining afloat and endangering traffic in the area of the Costa da Morte. Two were collected by the the fishing vessels 'Caprichosa' and 'Villa de Argote' from Laxe and a third in Camariñas. On Jan 17 the other five, described as floating tanks of about nine and 12 meters length, three meters width and two height, to be used for construction works, were recovered too. Three had been located at Langosteira Point and two others grounded on rocks, one of them in Santa Mariña (Camariñas). Although the 'Pemba' had notified Salvamento Marítimo immediately after the loss, the recovery work could only be carried out after weather improvement. A surveillance plane searched for the lost cargo, and in the aftetrnoon of Jan 17, all of it was recovered by means of Salvamento Marítimo. The 'Pemba berthed in Vigo at the Muelle de Tranversal on Jan 14 at 9 p.m. to secure the remaining cargo and investigate the damage and sailed again on Jan 23 at 3.15 p.m, headed to Szczecin with an ETA as of Jan 29.
