Container ship participated in SAR operation
The SAR vessel 'Guardamar Polimnia' (IMO: 9541679) has recovered three bodies and rescued another 29 people of Maghreb origin from a boat located in waters near the coast of Almería, 52 miles from Garrucha, on Oct 13. At around 10.15 a.m. the MRCC of Salvamento Marítimo in Cartagena (Murcia) alerted the counterpart in Almería about information regarding a .boat, the position of which was provided along with a satellite telephone number. The MRCC in Almería in vain tried to contact the boat, and requested the 'Nysted Maersk', en route from Algeciras to Haifa, which was in the vicinity, to divert to the position. Initially the crew did not find the boat, but finally reported that it had sighted a black inflatable boat of seven metres length, whose occupants were not wearing life jackets. The 'Guardamar Polimnia' was dispatched to the scene, and at around 2.15 p.m. it began to rescue the 29 occupants of the boat, as well as the three lifeless bodies of three other men who were on board. After the operation was completed, the ship headed to the port of Almería, where it is arrive at around 5.20 p.m. to disembark the migrants.
