Five crewmembers of the Sierra Leone-flagged cargo m/v "Karam 1" (IMO: 6517761) were missing after the ship, which was underway from Varna to Istanbul with a cargo of 2600 tons scrap metal, was in collision with the "Alessandro DP" 10 miles southeast of Cape Emine in the Black Sea. The accident happened at 5.40 p.m., and the cargo vessel foundered half an hour later. The "Alessandro DP" which was bound from Livorno to Varna and carried no cargo, suffered only slight damage. Only 5 of the 10 crew members of the "Karim 1", 9 from Syria and one from Egypt, were rescued. The 20 crewmembers of the "Alessandro DP" were not injured.
