Tanker allided with lock in Brunsbüttel

Wed Mar 29 09:14:25 CEST 2017 Timsen

Enroute from Tarragona to Rostock the "Rhonestern" allided with the middle wall of the large southern chamber of the Kiel Canal in Brunsbüttel short past midnight on March 29, 2017. The tanker slammed into the approach pier and the niche of the gate before the master dropped anchor which was dragged over the rails of the lcok gate. Both the lock and the tanker suffered significant damage. Actually the tanker, which will have to be repaired in a yard, is still berthed inside the lock and is being surveyed. Drug tests of the crew were negative. In the run of the day divers were sent down to survey underwater damage to the lock. Only the small southern lock and the large northern lock remained operating in Brunsbüttel until noon.
