Owner has to pay record sum after oil dumping
The situation of the 'Aldan' remained unchanged as of June 18, while the ship's manager must pay a 600,000 Euro ($713,640) fine to release the vessel. The amount was a record high for Spain. The Aldan's manager is the Greece-based Eurotankers Inc. The tanker has been detained for illegally dumping fuel in waters off the Canary Islands and creating a 21 square miles oil spill. The tanker was ordered to dock in the southern port of Alméria after the European Union's Maritime Safety Agency detected the spill through satellite imagery. Refinitiv shipping data showed the 'Aldan', which had been heading eastwards through the Mediterranean to Greece.
Tanker remains detained after oil spill
The Spanish transport ministry said that the 'Aldan' would remain detained in Almería until a security fee has been paid. Given the seriousness of the incident, they could face one of the highest penalties imposed so far by the General Directorate of the Merchant Marine. The European Maritime Safety Agency which monitors oil spills said it found the Aldan' through routine monitoring operations.
Tanker detained for polluton of sea
The Maritime Captaincy of Almeria of the General Directorate of the Merchant Marine has ordered the detention of the 'Aldan' for an illicit discharge of hydrocarbons on an area of about 55 km2.
