Explosion killed Chinese crew member
An explosion occurred in one of the cargo holds of the "Northern Guard" on Apr 6, 2014, most probably in a container, off the Mumbai coast. It killed a Chinese crew member, aged 25. The vessel sent a distress call that was received by the MRCC in Mumbai. A Dornier aircraft of the Indian Coast Guard that was on patrol sighted the damaged vessel nearly 100 miles SW of Mumbai. The vessel was enroute from Pipavav, where it had sailed on Apr 4, to Colombo. The patrol boat "Subhadra Kumari Chauhan" was diverted to provide medical assistance to the crew. The ship, with a medical and a fire-fighting team on board, arrived at the scene around 9.30 p.m. After assessing the situation, both the vessels proceeded at Mumbai. The body of the deceased was handed over to the authorities concerned. As of morning Apr 9, the vessel was in the same position anchored on the outer roads of Mumbai.
