Crew of Nordica assited in rescue of man in the water
Lifeboats of the DGzRS stations Schilksee and Laboe stations as well as the 'Nordica' came to the aid of an angler who had capsized with a pedal kayak at the height of Strande on the Kiel Fjord on Feb 29, 2020. Shortly after 2 p.m., both the crew of the 'Nordica' observed that a person was floating in the water north of the Strande marina. The MRCC of the DGzRS in bremen immediately alerted the lifeboat 'Berlin' and the volunteer crew of the lifeboat 'Gerhard Elsner' stationed in Schilksee. The captain of the 'Nordica' meanwhile managed to approach the man. However, he was already extremely hypothermic and could not actively support the rescue attempt. Almost 20 minutes after the alarm, the daughter boat 'Steppke' of the 'Berlin' arrived on site. Up to this point, a crew member of the 'Nordica' had managed to hold the man on a lifebuoy from the deck. However, it was not possible to pull him up. The rescuers brought the man through the side gate into the small boat. He was immediately wrapped in warm blankets. He was only wearing weather clothing, but not a life jacket. At the time of his rescue he had been in the water for over half an hour. With the pedal kayak he had gone fishing on the Baltic Sea and then capsized. The rescue teams reached the marina Strande at top speed, and the 66-year-old from Hamburg was handed over to an emergency doctor and the rescue service. The lifeboat from Schilksee recovered the pedal boat from the water. The water temperature in the Kiel Fjord was currently 5 degrees Celsius.
