Ferry adrift after waves smashed wind shields

Tue Nov 03 09:29:20 CET 2015 Timsen

On Nov 2, 2015, the "Nordfolda", enroute from Sandhornøy to Bodø, suffered water ingress off Bliksvær. As the captain expected a lot of wind, the two passengers were requested to remain seated. Ten minutes later the power went out and the engine stopped. Two windshields were smashed, and water flowed down from the second deck. The fire alarm went on, and the passengers were told to put on survival suits. At 5.43 p.m. the ship radioed a mayday. The "Nordfolda" was drifting without engine power in the powerful waves for half an hour before other ships arrived. The "Salten" and "Ofoten" quickly responded along with lifeboat "Ruth Opsahl" which towed the "Nordfolda" to Bodø under escort of the "Ofoten". At 6.30 p.m. the situation was under control. At 8.20 p.m. the "Nordfolda" arrived off Bodø with slightly improving weather conditions. On the quay police and paramedics, as well as representants from the port authority were attending. After the ship was docked at 9.15 p.m., the police of the Salten district interrogated crew and passengers. The ferry was later towed to Burøya. Norwegian report with photos and video: http://www.an.no/nyheter/plutselig-smalt-det-det-ble-helt-morkt-og-vann-begynte-a-fosse-inn/s/5-4-201209?null
