Ferry suffered gearbox trouble
The "Norderaue" suffered gearbox trouble during its Wadden Sea service. The ship was sidelined after its arrival from Wyk upon Foehr on Sep 16, 2019, at 2.15 p.m. in the ferry port of Dagebuell for repairs where it remained stationary on Sep 18. The reason was an unknown production error in the four gearboxes of the ship, which has already caused considerable damage in one of the gearboxes and can only be eliminated by specialist fitters of the Norwegian manufacturer. so the Wyker Dampfschiff Reederei apologized that it could not speed up the reapir of the damage through its own intervention team. While the passenger transport could take place without delays despite the failure of the "Norderaue", the affected vehicle customers were contacted by the operator. The ferry sailed again after repairs on Sep 27 at 7.20 a.m and berthed in Wyk upon Foehr at 10.40 a.m., resuming its schedule between the two ports.
WDR to launch new passenger ferry in 2019
German domestic ferry operator Wyker Dampfschiffs-Reederei Föhr-Amrum (WDR) is to introduce a new 250-passenger ferry to its fleet in spring 2019. Currently under construction in the Netherlands, the new ferry will be able to operate at a speed of up to 16 knots and will provide services in Germany. The news was revealed as WDR officially christened its latest new ferry Norderaue at the Port of Wyk on Föhr Island in Germany. Heike Tholund, wife of the company’s nautical inspector and fleet operations manager Captain Christ Tholund, acted as godmother during the naming ceremony. Norderaue was delivered by German shipyard Neptun Werft on 19 April and has been operating between the island ports of Wyk in Föhr, Wittdün in Amrum and the Schleswig-Holstein region on Germany’s mainland since the beginning of May.
