Clipper refloated

The "Noorderlicht" was refloated with the high tide on June 1 around 1 p.m. by the salvors of Noordgat. The ship headed to Harlingen where it arrived in the evening. The 26 children and their three teachers continued the voyage on board of another ship. 27 children evacuated from grounded clipper

The KNRM lifeboats "Graaf van Bylandt“ and "Huibert Dijkstra" from the station Vlieland took off 27 students from the third secondary school and three teachers of Githo from the "Noorderlicht" on May 31, 2016, which had run aground enroute from Makkum via Harlingen to Vlieland on a dam at the eastern tip of the island at 5 p.m. inspite of warnings of the Brandaris traffic control. The children were taken to the port of Vlieland. Later the KNRM boat returned to the ship to pick up the sleeping gear and some baggage of the kids who were intially collected in a school by the municipality and the police and then have spent the night at a campsite. Salvors of Noordgat attended with some boats and tried to pull the ship off, but because it was low tide, the attempt failed. Two crew members remained on board of the ship which was high and dry now. If the weather allows with the morning's high tide on June 1, the salvors of Noordgat will try again to refloat the charter ship. Dense fog was thought to have been the cause that the ship had sailed onto the dam. In the afternoon of June 1, the SAR-vessel "Hurricane" (MMSI: 355519000), the tug "Hunter" (IMO: 7224899), the "SAR Typhoon" (MMSI: 244830160) and the "RWS 74" were assembled at the grounding site.
