Mystery around missing ship

Wed Jul 12 19:44:45 CEST 2017 Timsen

The owner of the "Noor al Huda" accused Egypt, namely the Red Sea Ports Authority, of hijacking the vessel with a cargo of 4300 tons of sugar and flour, which was destined for Saudi Arabia. According to available AIS data, incident started in January. According to the shipowner, the vessel had developed a list due to a failure of one of the pumps, while leaving the port of Tawfik, bound for Jeddah. The crew abandoned the vessel, and since then, it was being kept somewhere hidden, with all electronic equipment being switched off. It had sent distress signal after developing list, and tugs from the Red Sea Ports Authority were contracted. It may be assumed then, that Egyptian authorities found the abandoned vessel as their rightful acquisition as a result of salvage. The owner filed a complaint with IMO, claiming the crew asked for technical assistance, not for a rescue, and the vessel wasn’t in danger of sinking.
