Bulk carrier rescued fisherman
The fishing boat 'Proa al Sol II' with three people on board sank on July 13, 2024, at 9.45 p.m. off the port of Mar del Plata for reasons that were still being established, after issuing a May Day call apparently without any subsequent radio communication. Minutes after that last call, there was a second automatic distress call from a Garmin device in a position in vicinity 38º03´33¨S 56º 53 `44¨W, 30 nautical miles east of the local port. Weather conditions were very good, with no wind and minor waves, but extremely cold.. The Argentine Naval Prefecture diverted the 'BP Margot' and the 'NKR Alice', on a route between the port of Necochea and Recalada, to the emergency zone. At around 10:00 p.m., the 'GC-72 Buenos Aires' left the port, and a helicopter was deployed too. Minutes before midnight the “NKR Alice” located the semi-sunken hull of the boat, and one of its crew members who remained on the structure. He was rescued with the helicopter and transferred with hypothermia to the Interzonal Hospital at 2 a.m. The man stated that the rest of the crew was not wearing a life jacket and that he observed both of them submerge. In the early hours of July 13 the ARA Oceanic Patrol Boat “Contraalmirante Cordero”, of the Maritime Patrol Division, assisted in the search for them. The Prefecture continuedthe search for the other two with the “Buenos Aires” of the Coastguard, the fishing vessel “Margot” and air craft and the helicopter that carried out the evacuation.
