Ferry and lifeboat assisted troubled yacht
The DGzRS station Kuehlungsborn rescued two sailors – a man and a woman – in the Bay of Mecklenburg in the night of July 14, 2023, after the attentive crew of the "Nils Holgersson" had discovered the small wooden yacht, which was unable to maneuver in the dark, drifting in the middle of the fairway. At around 4.45 a.m. the "Nils Holgersson" reported to the MRCC, that the ferry, en route from Trelleborg to Travemünde, noticed a light signal Flashlight from a 9,5 meter-sailing yacht that was drifting in the fairway with waves of about one meter height. The lifeboat 'Konrad Otto', stationed in Kühlungsborn, was alerted to the scene about nine nautical miles off the mainland, between Fehmarn and Kuehlungsborn. Meanwhile, the ferry stopped and protected the sailing yacht from the wind. When the lifeboat reached the distressed vessel, she went alongside and two rescuers climbed over. The elderly couple aboard wanted to transfer the sailing yacht to Warnemünde and suffered a broken mast at around 3 a.m. Lines floating in the water then got caught in the propeller and disabled the boat. The sea rescuers recovered the mast and floating lines and secured everything on board. The lifeboat then took the vessel in tow and towed it to Kuehlungsborn. The sailors were unharmed.
