Scheldt river blocked after loss of 18 containers
In the afternoon of Dec 29, 2018, the "Nero", 3576 dwt (EU-No.: 02326738), lost some 18 containers in the port of Antwerp. The barge developed a sharp list to port with the deck being partially submerged, but righted itself again when the containers fell over board between ship and quay. The boxes ended up in the Scheldt and drifted to the navigation channel. As a result, ship traffic from and to Antwerp came to a standstill. The incident took place just after the bend of the Zandvliet lock off the quays of port company PSA at the North Sea terminal. It was not yet known why the containers could fall from the ship. The first concern was to clear the fairway. After that, the investigation could start with, among other things, the questioning of the captain of the barge. A sailing and departure ban has been announced on the Scheldt. A fleet of tugs was on site and the floating containers were hoisted back onto the shore. The recovery work was in full swing in the evening. The containers were hardly visible from the Scheldt dikes.
