Tanker grounding in Kiel Canal

Fri Mar 02 09:37:55 CET 2018 Timsen

The "North Sea Rational" ran aground on March 2, 2018. around 4.15 a.m. in the northern embankment of the Kiel Canal near Horsten area, halfway between Rendsburg and Oldenbüttel, while transiting the canal in western direction, coming from Riga. The loaded tanker had suffered an engine failure. The crew was unable to get the engine running again, so that the SFK-tug "Holtenau" (IMO-No.: 8200321) from Kiel and the Bugsier-tug "Wolf" (IMO-No.: 9036260) from Brunsbüttel were called. Until the "Holtenau“ was on site at 6.30 a.m. the canal was closed for all ship traffic between Rendsburg and Breiholz. After the "Holtenau" had connected with the vessel's stern, the ships was allowed to pass in one way traffic. The tanker was also stabilized by dropping the starboard anchor. Short past 8 a.m. the tugs managed to pull the ship out of the embankment. It was towed to Breiholz for initial surveys, before the convoy headed to Brunsbüttel, where it berthed at the pilings of the South Quay in Brunsbüttel at 2.20 p.m. for investigations and surveys. The ship had to be repaired after the piston of a cylinder of the main engine broke. It sailed on March 15 and arrived in Rotterdam on March 17.
