Collision caused by misunderstanding

Wed Dec 21 13:36:39 CET 2011 Timsen

An interpretation error was the cause of the collision Thursday evening between the "Nelly" and the "Capella" at the intersection of the North Holland Canal and the Alkmaardermeer Hollandskanaal. Both ships were northbound, the "Nelly" was loaded with sand bound to Alkmaar, the "Capella" was empty and came from Purmerend. A miscommunication between the two captains the ships came into collision. The skippers have communicated with each other via VHF, but one of the two has been misinterpreted the other. The "Nelly" was hit at the starboard side and started to sink. After the collision the ships managed to berth alongside a pontoon just south of the Akersloot ferry where the "Capella" assisted the "Nelly". thereto. The skipper of Nelly put his car with the car crane on shore. The fire rescue and the sand trader Van Vliet arrived with pumps. Then the sand from the beaten ship was lightered druing the night. On Dec 16 morning around 8 a.m. the "Nelly" was secured and later permitted to sail to Wormerveer for repairs. Nelly sank after collision

Fri Dec 16 10:07:35 CET 2011 Timsen

In the night of Dec 16, 2011, the "Nelly" sank on the Noordhollands Canal near the ferry point Akersloot following the collision with another self propelled barge, the "Capella". The "Nelly" was holed and foundered with a list to starboard. The fire rescue of Castricum and Akersloot proceeded in order to pump out the water. The "Nelly" was wedged btween the quay and the "Capella", and a dredger started to remove the cargo of sand to get the ship higher in the water to enable salvors to patch the leak.
