Medevacc off Breton coast

Fri Apr 09 10:17:57 CEST 2021 Timsen

In the afternoon of April 8, 2021, the Premar Atlantique wase informed that a crew member of the 'Agri Queen' was injured after being swept by a wave aboard the bulk carrier which was sailing 265 nautical miles Southwest of the Breton coast. At 8.45 p.m., the CROSS Etel took charge of coordinating the operation. After a medical consultation by telephone, the evacuation of the injured sailor was decided. A Cayman helicopter from the 33F flotilla at the Lanvéoc-Poulmic naval air base embarked a medical team specializing in sea rescue from the Finistère emergency medical aid service (SAMU 29). A Falcon 50 surveillance aircraft from the 24F flotilla from the Lann-Bihoué naval air base took off to relocate the ship, support the helicopter crew offshore and relay communications to shore. After more than one hour, the Caiman helicopter landed on the frigate 'Aquitaine' to refuel, while the Falcon 50 Marine circled over the cargo ship. The helicopter then dropped off the medical team aboard the 'Agri Queen' which took take care of the victim. At 2:44 a.m. on April 9, the sailor and the medical team were winched aboard the helicopter. At 4:15 a.m., the victim was dropped off at the Cavale Blanche regional university hospital in Brest, where he was taken care of. The 'Agri Queen' was enroute from Ponta Ubu to Ghent with 21 crew members on board with an ETA as of April 10.
